Assess your firewall setup - Norton

< Back to Use Security tools

If you use Windows XP SP2 (XP Service Pack 2), it's a good idea to keep the Windows firewall on unless you are using another software firewall. If you do use another software firewall, turn off your Windows firewall by following these steps.

  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click Security Center (on the bottom right).
  • Click Windows Firewall.
  • Choose On or Off.
  • Click OK.

Firewalls can block your connection to certain Web sites or features, including some of our tools (such as TD AMERITRADE Streamer™). If you have a software firewall installed on your computer, it is important to configure it so that all of the features on the sites you trust are available to you and not blocked.

You can do this by adding sites to your firewall's "trusted" list — the list of sites to which you approve access. Below are directions for doing this for Norton Internet Security™.

To add items to your Norton Internet Security Trusted Zone:

  • Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall on the gateway computer.
  • For Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2004, double-click Personal Firewall and then click the Networking tab.
  • For Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003, double-click Personal Firewall and then click the Home Networking tab.
  • For Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2002 and 2001, click Personal Firewall, and then click Internet Zone Control. (This step is shown below for Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2002.)
  • Click the Trusted tab, and then click Add. In Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2004, the Networking dialog box will appear. In Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003, 2002, or 2001, the Specify Computers dialog box will appear.
  • Enter a single trusted address or a range of trusted addresses.
Note: You can enter a range of addresses if the ones you want to add are an unbroken sequence of numbers (these are the addresses to enter for using our site: 199.200.9.39, 199.200.9.1, 204.58.27.34, 204.58.27.43, 204.58.27.51, 204.58.27.60).

To enter addresses individually, ensure that Individually is checked in the Network (Specify Computers) dialog box.

  • Enter addresses, separated by a space. (Shown below for Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003, 2002, or 2001)
  • Click OK to add individual addresses.
To add a range of addresses
  • Click Using a range and enter the lowest address number as the Starting Internet address and the highest address number as the Ending Internet address (shown below), then click OK.
